The cable insulation consists of placing a sheath over the conductor to prevent current leakage.…
Designation of Medium Voltage power cables
The designation of Medium Voltage power cables follows a specific guideline. These cables are designed, manufactured and tested in accordance with international standards HD 620 and IEC 60502-2.
The designation of medium voltage cables consists of letters and numbers, each with a meaning. This coding identifies unique characteristics of the cable, such as the material from which it is made or the rated voltage.

EXAMPLES OF DESIGNATION OF MEDIUM VOLTAGE POWER CABLES
Some examples of the meaning of the nomenclature that appears on the cover of Medium Voltage cables:

EXAMPLE OF RHZ1 CABLE
X-VOLT RHZ1-OL (S) 12/20 kV 1×150 K AL+H16

X–VOLT ……………………… The designation of medium voltage power cables begins with the trade name. In this case, X-VOLT, which is TOP CABLE’s range of medium and high voltage cables.
RH …………………………..…….. These letters refer to the cable sheaths, always from the conductor outwards. In this case, XLPE radial-field insulation, applied in triple extrusion together with the inner and outer semiconductor layers.
Z1 ………………………….………. Halogen-free polyolefin outer sheath.
-OL ………………………….…… Simple longitudinal sealing (under sheath).
(S) …………………………..…… Safety cable, flame non-propagation.
12/20 kV ……………………… Rated nominal, kV
1×150 …………………………… Conductor cross section, in mm2. In this case, it is a single-pole cable.
K AL ……………………………… Rigid aluminum compacted conductor, class 2.
+H16 ……………………………… Concentric screen of copper wires of 16mm2 cross section.
IEC 60502 …………………… Cable reference standard.
AENOR …………………..……… Mark indicating that the product is certified.
140422 ………………………..… Date of manufacture; in this case, April 22, 2014.
787 ………………………..……… Marked meter by meter. In this case, we are on meter 787 of the coil. This is very important to control the remaining stock of the coil.

EXAMPLE OF HEPRZ1 CABLE
X-VOLT HEPRZ1 18/30kV 1×240 +H25

X-VOLT …………………..………… Again, the designation of medium voltage power cables begins with the trade name.
HEPR ………………………………… HEPR and radial field isolation.
Z1 ……………………………..….…… Halogen-free polyolefin outer sheath.
We can see that this cable is NOT watertight, as it is not indicated. Neither does it have special characteristics against fire (it is not indicated by (S) or (AS)).
18/30 kV …………………………… Rated nominal voltage, in kV.
1×240 …………………………..…… Conductor cross-section in mm2. In this case we see that it is also a single-core cable.
Cu ……………………………………… Copper conductor.
+H25 …………………………….…… Concentric screen, of Cu wires and 25mm2.
Correct marking is a guarantee of quality, because it clearly identifies the cable manufacturer, the technical characteristics of the product and the certifications obtained.
