THE CABLE DETERMINES THE YIELD OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM

In solar installations, the high volume of cables makes it essential to use electrical conductors of the highest quality. The optimal selection of the cable will determine the short, medium and long-term performance of the solar farm, as the electrical energy flows through it.

The installation of unsuitable cables has caused numerous economic losses in installations where, over the years, cracks have occurred in the outer sheath of cables that have not been specifically designed to withstand the degradation caused by solar radiation. In these cases, the replacement costs and electrical losses in the solar installation are substantial.

TOPSOLAR® H1Z2Z2-K cable, designed by Top Cable for photovoltaic applications, is capable of resisting ultraviolet rays, ozone, sand abrasion and water absorption, as well as providing excellent strength and flexibility in extreme weather conditions during prolonged exposure to sunlight.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) ABOUT TOPSOLAR® PV H1Z2Z2-K CABLE

What does the acronyms H1Z2Z2-K mean on a power cable?

Each cable has a standardised designation. The letters and numbers refer to the cable outer sheath, other sheath, the conductor class, the rated voltage and the final composition of the cable. In the case of H1Z2Z2-K, the letters stand for:

H1: Rated Voltage: 1.5/1.5 kV DC Harmonised cable.
Z2: Insulation: halogen-free cross-linked compound.
Z2: Outer sheath: halogen free cross-linked compound.
K: Electrolytic copper conductor, tin-plated, Class 5 according to IEC 60228. (In the case of solar cables, the tin-plated copper conductor is a requirement of the EN 50618 standard.)
1.5 kV: Rated voltage in kV.

Further information on the designation of power cables can be found here.

What is the design of the TOPSOLAR® H1Z2Z2-K solar cable?

Top Cable’s TOPSOLAR® PV H1Z2Z2-K cable is manufactured in accordance with EN 50618 / IEC 62930 / UTE C 32-502:

Conductor: tinned copper class 5 (flexible).
Insulation and outer sheath: Halogen-free rubber (LSZH). (improved flexibility).
Electrical performance: 1.5/1.5 (1.8) kV DC.
UV and Ozone resistant.
Water performance: AD8 (submerged).
Estimated life of 30 years.
Thermal performance: 120ºC / -40ºC.
Chemical and oil resistance: excellent.
TÜV certificate.
CPR (Construction Products Regulation): Cca-s1b,d2,a1.

Why does the H1Z2Z2-K solar cable have a tin-plated copper conductor?

The EN 50618 standard requires solar cables type H1Z2Z2-K to have flexible tin-plated copper conductors with a single core and cross-linked insulation and sheathing. The tin-plated flexible copper conductor has a better corrosion and moisture resistance.

Why can’t we use RV-K or ZZ-F cable in a photovoltaic installation?

It is important for PV engineers to check that the products supplied to them by their suppliers comply with EN 50618, as this standard sets higher requirements.

Installations with RV-K (or RZ1-K) cable do not comply with the current EN 50618 solar standard and can present severe electrical hazards. The new EN 50618 standard requires a voltage of 1500V, whereas the voltage of a RV-K cable is 900V. In addition, RV-K cables do not pass the Arrenhius test, which is an ageing test to ensure the electrical reliability of the cables. Finally, the EN 50618 standard requires solar cables to have tinned conductors and cross-linked insulation and sheathing, characteristics which the RV-K (and RZ1-K) cable lacks.

ZZ-F type cables are now discontinued . It has been replaced by the TOPSOLAR® H1Z2Z2-K.

TOPSOLAR® H1Z2Z2-K, manufactured by Top Cable, is certified by TÜV according to EN 50618. This standard requires that the cables have flexible, tin-plated copper conductors with a single core and cross-linked insulation and sheathing. In addition, the cables must be low-smoke and halogen-free. This ensures that the cable operates safely and at full electrical performance in solar installations.

Why did you change to the current Solar Standard EN 50618?

In recent years, leading solar panel manufacturers have improved their technology, increasing the operating voltage up to 1500 V DC. This new voltage has a direct impact on project profitability, resulting in significant cost reductions, longer links and fewer junction boxes and wiring. All DC components also had to be upgraded to a higher operating voltage, and international regulatory bodies issued new standards and certificates to ensure their suitability.

The new standard, published in 2014, is EN 50618. This standard specifies that cables in PV system installations must have a rated continuous voltage of up to 1.5 kV. The international safety qualification standard for PV modules – IEC 61730 – requires PV module cables to comply with EN 50618.

The TOPSOLAR® H1Z2Z2-K cable, manufactured by Top Cable, is certified by TÜV according to EN 50618. The EN 50618 standard requires cables to have flexible tinned copper conductors with a single core and cross-linked insulation and sheathing. In addition, the cables must be low-smoke and halogen-free. This ensures that the cable operates safely and at full performance in photovoltaic modules in solar parks and industrial or residential rooftop installations.

What section of cable do I need to connect the solar panels?

The most common cable cross-sections for connecting the solar panels together are 4mm2 or 6mm2. The most common cable cross-section between the junction of the solar panels and the regulator is 16 mm2. The cable cross-section in the regulator-battery section can vary between 16mm2 and 35mm2. In the battery-inverter section, a minimum cross-section of 35 mm2 should be useddue tothe high currents generated towards the inverter.

Why is it important that a H1Z2Z2-K solar cable is halogen-free and CPR classified as Cca?

The EN 50618 standard requires solar cables type H1Z2Z2-K to have a low smoke, corrosive gas and halogen-free (LSZH) sheathing in case of fire.

In addition, in Europe, according to CPR regulations, the minimum reaction to fire class required for cables must be Cca. TOPSOLAR® H1Z2Z2-K cable , manufactured by Top Cable, has the highest solar CPR certification: Cca-s1b,d2,a1.
